Created for the Stuttgart Ballet in 2023. Inspired by The Birds by Aristophanes, a space is envisioned on the border between heaven and earth, hovering (in Italian “sospesi”) between the earthly and heavenly realms.

Supermodified

A work that centers on the theme of artificial intelligence, exploring the boundaries between human and artificial intelligence and questioning whether it’s really necessary to draw such lines at all — asking whether the mere existence of an intelligence, regardless of its origin, might simply help improve the quality of our lives. Astolfi turns the usual fear around, suggesting we might have more reason to fear the consequences of human intelligence than a new form of intelligence.

A Night Walker

Daughters and Angels

A work inspired by Isabel Pérez Molina’s Knowledge and Powers, a reference text in Women’s Studies. It grows out of Astolfi’s long-held fascination with the imagery of “witches” — not the spectacle of cinema or the veneer of magic, but the cultural constructs, gender and language stereotypes, and abuses of power still rooted in society today

In Esisto

Created for the Stuttgart Ballet. From Dante’s visions to Dan Flavin’s moods, from Carlo Rovelli’s theory of white holes to James Turrell’s luminous cracks in space – the transition from blindness to light, from night-time blackness to dawn, is one of the most impressive experiences that art and science have attempted to explore.

NACHT/GEDANKEN

“Night, as the counterpart to day, has always fascinated humankind. In myths about the creation of the world, darkness is the beginning of all things. Night can fill us with dread and terror, but it also holds mystery, representing passion and sensuality, peace and regeneration. At night, we dream and turn our gaze inward. In collage-like images, Ivan Alboresi and his ballet company create a captivating portrait.”

Day <Without> Night

 Day Without Night was created for Basel Ballet in 2019. The work was greatly inspired by the poetry of Rumi, the Persian poet, which can be heard in the music during tracks 1, 3 and 7. It was presented in 6 channel surround sound.

Nonchalant

Created for West Australian Ballet this work focuses more on the absurd and silly side of life. The track was built out of analog sounds of weapons and instruments manipulated into a rhythmic piece with a fun and bouncy vibe

A Tale Of Impermanence

This work was based on the concepts of death and the recognition of the impermanence of life. Life is fleeting and the death of a loved one moved the choreographer to create this work with NDT2 to honor his life. Using manipulations of text and voice mixed with more traditional orchestral elements and found sounds.

The Little Great People

TLGP was a sequence of 3 duets, all with different themes and feelings. We worked with the ideas of polarity, reflectings and absorbing, nature, and social interaction. A lot of the music was created by manipulating a single recording of a voice and the sounds happening in the environment around the recording. Also text and remixes of works by Beethoven and Ludovico Einaudi.

Winterreise

Winterreise was a combination of Schubert’s haunting music, played live onstage, and playback transitions that I created. The goal was to bring a modern flair to the Winterreise without compromising the beauty of the original.

Nous

Nous (which means mind or reason) was a dance work about the inner struggles of the human mind. The inter and intrapersonal fights or storms we have to walk into every now and then to progress and survive. It surrounded the audience in 6 channel surround sound. ” And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over but one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in.
